1971-Born in England into a family of artists, Martin was painting and doing creative projects from an early age. His mother and step-father helped to nurture this creative spirit. An early influence on him was the community he grew up around in South Wimbledon, London and particularly a community artist and teacher; Val Hall. It was on the streets of South London that Martin found hip hop which spoke clearly at that time about the trials and tribulations of urban youth. 1993-Moved to Berkeley, California. There he found Ross Drago's Energy Arts Studio. Amazed and inspired by the murals of San Francisco's Mission district, it was here in 1998 that he met Spie One, a graffiti artist who would have a major influence on his life and become a like a brother. 2000-Invited by Derryl and Naomi White to participate in a mural commemorating the life of JoJo White, their son , who was brutally killed in a random act of violence. The mural was painted in Cuba where JoJo had a community center named after him for his solidarity work. A couple of weeks before their trip together, graffiti artist Mike 'Dream' Francisco was murdered on the streets of Oakland. He left behind a fiance and a son. These two tragic events had a huge impact on Martin. 2003-Martin met Ray Patlan, a Chicano mural artist and mentor, and attended his public arts workshops at Laney College, Oakland. Here he learnt about the mural arts movement from Mexico to the U.S and beyond, and how public arts/murals could raise the hopes and aspirations of marginalised communities. 2003-Travelled to Gaza, Palestine with Dr. Susan Greene to work with young people from refugee camps, using art as a tool to shed light on the horrors of war and a brutal occupation which made thousands homeless in their own land. This experience had a profound impact on his life. 2004-Martin was invited to Ireland by TRASNET (Tralee Refugee and Asylum Network) after rising racial tensions was aimed at refugees and asylum seekers in a small town in Co.Kerry. The community was shocked and wanted to take action. Part of that action was to hold a series of workshops concluding with a large scale mural painting. 2007-Martin began conducting art workshops with a youth group from the Philipines who had recently migrated to the Netherlands. This ongoing project is called Artreach and aims to work with young people from disadvantaged communities. In 2007 Martin Co-Founded PAN (Peoples Artist Network). |
